The Institute of Structural Engineering at Jilin University conducts applied and fundamental research on structures within transportation infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and tunnels. Its research spans the theory and application of structural reliability, fundamental theories of concrete and reinforced-concrete structures, structural seismic performance and design theory, intelligent inspection technologies and scientific maintenance methods for transportation infrastructure, and freeze–thaw stability control techniques together with the modification mechanisms and performance analysis of high-performance road construction materials—yielding numerous significant research achievements.
The institute currently comprises 18 faculty members, including 3 professors affiliated with the Tang Aoqing Scholars Program, 9 professors serving as doctoral supervisors, 7 associate professors, and 2 senior engineers. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 50 vertical and horizontal research projects, including projects under the National Key Research and Development Program, the National High-Tech Research and Development Program (863 Program), the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and various provincial and ministerial research programs. The institute has published more than 200 academic papers, been granted more than 100 national invention patents, and received the Jilin Province Science and Technology Progress Award (First Class) on three occasions. Its faculty and graduate students have made multiple academic exchange visits to the University of Kansas, Texas State University, Virginia Tech, the University of Colorado Denver, and Michigan Technological University.
The institute is equipped with advanced experimental instrumentation, including a multifunctional loading system; a static and dynamic structural performance testing system; a system for field measurement and simulation-based optimization analysis of road and bridge structures; an acoustic emission detector; an MTS electro-hydraulic servo structural fatigue testing machine; a Cooper multifunctional pneumatic asphalt material testing machine; a dynamic triaxial testing machine; a computer-controlled electro-hydraulic servo pressure testing machine; a high–low temperature alternating test chamber; a rapid freeze–thaw testing apparatus for concrete; a Swedish MALA ground-penetrating radar system; a vibration testing and analysis system; and a rebar testing instrument.
The institute has consistently remained at the forefront of its discipline, with a sustained commitment to solving practical engineering problems. Its research findings have been applied in the construction of more than 1,000 bridges—including the Pingnan Third Bridge, China's largest-span arch bridge—as well as numerous key expressway, tunnel, and station projects within and beyond Jilin Province, generating significant social and economic benefits. Graduate and undergraduate students under the institute's supervision have published widely in journals such as 《Construction and Building Materials》, 《International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics》, and 《Structural Engineering and Mechanics》, and have received honors including the National Scholarship, Outstanding Graduate awards, and second-class prizes in national transportation science and technology competitions.
