In 2002, the Ministry of Education approved Jilin University to establish the doctoral program in Transportation(Transportation Environment and Safety Technology), upon which the university founded the Automotive Traffic Safety Research Center.

At present, the center has 6 doctoral students and 24 master’s students.
Supported by traffic accident theories and simulation technologies, the center conducts interdisciplinary research on traffic accident scene survey technology, accident kinematics, collision dynamics and accident reconstruction simulation technologies based on vehicle dynamics, tire-road mechanics, virtual reality, traffic conflict technology, collision mechanics, traceology, applied psychology, ergonomics, computer graphics and database technology. It explores theories and safety technologies for traffic accident reconstruction, with core research focuses including vehicle safety technology, theories and methods of traffic accident reconstruction, rapid disposal and emergency response technologies for major traffic incidents, vehicle driving reliability under diverse road traffic environments, vehicle driving safety, driving behavior characteristics, vehicle-road-human system dynamics, and automotive service mode evaluation. It provides technical support for analyzing the interaction, adaptability and safety state optimization of vehicle-road-human-environment systems.
The center is equipped with high-speed cameras, vehicle dynamic recorders, driver operation testing systems, driver psychological testing systems, medium-speed camera systems, traffic accident simulation software PC-CRASH and CAR, 2D mapping systems and 3D measurement systems for traffic accident scenes, driving behavior simulation platforms, driving psychological testing systems, and lateral dynamics simulation systems for vehicle combinations.
The center has published 166 academic papers, undertaken 41 research projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, former Ministry of Machine-Building Industry, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Public Security and Jilin Provincial Department of Transport. It has completed approximately 1,100 identification projects for severe traffic accidents entrusted by traffic police departments, procuratorates and courts nationwide, published 16 textbooks and monographs, and obtained 39 authorized national patents.
